He studied Philosophy at the Seminary of Saints Peter and Paul, Bodija, Ibadan from 1981-84, before proceeding to the Catholic University of Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Zaire at the time) where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Theology in 1987, the year of his priestly ordination.
He obtained his Master of Arts and Licentiate degrees in Theology at the Dominican University College in Ottawa, Canada in 1991, and his Doctor of Philosophy degree at Boston College, USA in 1996.

Professor Akinwale began his teaching career at Boston College as Teaching Assistant in 1993, and later as Teaching Fellow in 1995.  In 1996, he joined the staff of the Dominican Institute in Ibadan where he became Professor Systematic Theology and Thomistic Studies in 2006.
Since 2012, he has been Visiting Professor at the Institut Saint Thomas d’Aquin in Yamoussoukro, Cote d’Ivoire, an affiliate school of the Catholic University of West Africa in Abidjan, and at the Major Seminary of SS Peter and Paul, Bodija.

Professor Akinwale served as pioneer Dean of Studies at the Dominican Institute from 1996-2000, and President of the Institute from 2004-2016.  Under his leadership, the Dominican Institute received full accreditation of its Philosophy programme from the National Universities Commission for two consecutive times and full accreditation of its pontifical Theology programme.

A scholar of national and international repute and a proponent of quality education, Professor Akinwale is  past President of the Catholic Theological Association of Nigeria (2001-04),  past Editor-in-Chief of the Nigerian Journal of Theology (1999-2002), member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Inculturation Theology since 2000, Fellow of the DePaul University Centre for World Catholicism and Intercultural Theology in Chicago since 2014, consultant to the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (1999-2001), to the Nigerian Anglican Roman Catholic Commission since 2004, and to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (2007-2015).  He was also Chairman, Planning and Implementation Committee of the Dominican University (2013-2017).

He is also Chairman of the Editorial Board of Catholic Weekly Independent newspaper and an unwavering writer since 2008 of the popular and widely-read column “Thought for the Week” in the Catholic Weekly Independent newspaper.

Professor Akinwale has authored three books, co-edited three, and published over 100 academic essays in national and international journals.  Apart from his academic essays, his articles in religious and secular newspapers have always been analytical and intellectual expositions of both pressing and timeless issues that bother on religion, philosophy, politics, education and development.

In July 2017, Fr Akinwale was appointed by the Master of the Order of Preachers to serve for a term of six years on the Permanent Commission for the Promotion of Intellectual Life in the Order of Preachers.  The Commission is composed of eight professors in the Dominican Order chosen from around the world and advises the Master of the Order on issues relating to the Order’s universities.
